Author How To
This tutorial will get you writing cool articles in no time.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN!!!
- For best results PLEASE use the FIREFOX browser. Unlike Safari, firefox allows for a visual editor that will make posting EXTREMELY EASY! If you use safari you will be forced to write your posts in html!
Logging In
After you’ve received your Username & Password you are free to start writing to your little hearts content. The first thing you must do however is log in.
To log in go to the following address:
You will then be brought to the following screen (assuming this is your first login).
Simply your username and password as it appears in the email you received.
***PLEASE NOTE: Username and password are CASE SENSITIVE! If you do not capitalize correctly you will not be able to log in.
The Wordpress Backend
Now that You are Logged In you should see a page that looks like this:
What you are seeing is the Wordpress backend of IntellectualMusician.com. This is the guts of the site and is responsible for managing all of the content on the site.
Your profile:
Now that you’re in the “system” you will need to create a profile for yourself. The information you include in your profile page is what will show up on your author page, so make sure it’s something you want to share, and is worth reading! (You can view your author page at http://intellectualmusician.com/authors/yourauthorlogin (but you must have at least one post to your credit first!))
Go to your profile page. It should look something like this:
Make sure to fill out all of the fields on this page. If a field asks for information that does not relate to you please just write “none”.
***DO NOT FORGET: to fill out the “About Yourself” heading as it is your biography.
At this point you can also change your password. After you are finished click update profile and you’re done.
Please note: You can always come back and change your profile, but we ask that you create your profile before you do anything else so there will be no blank pages on our site.
SET YOUR DISPLAY NAME!
You can choose how the public sees you by changing the “Display Name Publicly As:” option. “Firstname, Lastname” is the recommended display, however the default is set to your user name.
YOUR PICTURE!
In order for a picture of you to display with your articles & bio you must either upload it to the site (see below) or email it to admin@intellectualmusician.com. Please don’t forget to do this important step, as a our studies have found that 70% of the traffic you receive after your article has been timed off the homepage comes from people who click on your author picture.
Start Writing
Now you can start writing you articles/lessons! If you prefer you can do most of the actual typing in Microsoft word and use the built in “paste from word” button to import your text. You are also allowed to use images/music/whatever in your lessons but please resize to below 500px in width before you upload them so they don’t look like crap when displayed. Please note that there is a resize option built into the picture up-loader, but when using it you should ONLY resize one dimension. (more on this later)
So here’s the write a post screen:
To Write A Post:
PLEASE NOTE!: If your “write post” window does not look similar to this one you should try using the Firefox browser, as it is simply a better browser and everything will work.
Be sure to include:
- Article Title
- The Article Title will also become the url address for the post so I recommend removing all spaces spaces and special characters from your title. Then after you publish your post you can go back in and change the title without effecting the url address.
- The Post Itself
- The Category!!!!
- The category window is on the right hand side of the screen. Please, please, please do not for get to list all relevant categories your post is filed under. This makes it so much easier for users to find your content -meaning you’ll make more money.
You should not have to mess with any of the other side bar information (Discussion, Post Password, etc…)
Saving Your Post:
Please Note!: When you save an article is does not automatically publish. Meaning you can save an article without publishing it.
Also: Do not click PUBLISH until your article is 100% COMPLETE!
If you publish an incomplete article it will be deleted and you will be given a stern talking to.
Uploading Images.
As mentioned before, when resizing images please only fill in one of the resize fields (width or height) as it will distort if both are filled in.
Also, if you would like to have an image of yourself display in your profile page (highly recommended) please upload a picture to the site with you name on it and then post on the forum or shoot me an email at admin@intellectualmusician.com and I will add it to your profile immediately.
Music Notation!!!
Music notation must be uploaded in an image format!!! (jpg, gif, png). You CAN NOT upload a music notation file and expect it to display. So please either take a screen shot of your music notation and save it as an image, scan notation in as an image, or in some other fashion convert your notation into an image file, then upload to the site just as you would any other image!
Uploading Audio & Video
Upload your mp3, flv, mov, mp4, m4v, m4a, m4b, 3gp, wmv, avi or asf file via the WordPress editor’s upload browser (just as with pictures) then click “send to editor” - or make a hypertext link to any external file on the web - and you’re done! You can save and then scroll down the page to the preview to see what your audio/video will look like.
You can also post links from YouTube, & Google Video (not embedded, just the link) and they will also display in the same manner as the other audio/files files you would typically upload.
Accepted image upload file extensions:
.gif .jpg .png
Using the MORE feature.
Every post should start out with a short 1 or 2 sentence introduction that will display on the home page, after this introduction you should add a “More Content” break that will keep your whole post from displaying on the home page!! Simply click the more content button and a break will be inserted in your post. You can then continue writing your article as you normally would. Here is a picture of the more content button.
Adding Amazon.com Ads to your content!
We now give you the option of choosing to advertise for a specific product off Amazon.com in you content.
That’s it! Now you should be ready to get writing. Thanks for being part of the IntellectualMusician.com team!
