Brien picked up saxophone at the age of 10, and in the last 20 years he has played in all kinds of groups, including jazz combos and big bands, rock bands, funk and soul groups, orchestra, wind ensemble, chamber ensemble, marching band, as well as experimental musical projects. He even backed up an Elvis impersonator once or twice. He has studied saxophone, clarinet, and flute with Bruce Babad (Fullerton College), clarinet with Charlie McCarthy (City College San Francisco), and composition with Rebecca Mauleon-Santana (CCSF). Brien performs with Quixote Modern Jazz Quartet, Her Grace The Duchess soul revue, and ULTRA FORCE cushy-wush in San Francisco, and teaches at Vibo Music Center in SF. He also composes for classical ensembles and jazz groups.
